Song: Song is a loud, short (less than two seconds), musical trill, with more ringing quality than Chipping Sparrow (often with the duration and quality of the ring of a rotary dial phone ). Speed is variable: usually too fast to count the notes but sometimes slow enough to be able to count them (~8 notes per second). Individuals singing at the fast and dry end of the spectrum can be extremely difficult to separate from Chipping Sparrow. Compare also to Pine Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, and Swamp Sparrow.
