Black-backed Woodpecker - Picoides arcticus

Photo: Jim Williams; 2006 Oct 2; USA, Minnesota; Adult; Male;
Song: The call note is a short, sharp "chit" or "crick" reminiscent of Hairy Woodpecker but stronger, sharper, and lower pitched. Also a mechanical rattle given when agitated. Drumming is relatively slow and even, without the pronounced drop at the end as in American Three-toed. Generally not very vocal, often best located by the quiet scraping and tapping produced while flaking spruce bark.
Sound: Monty Brigham (Bird Sounds of Canada); 1975 Nov 6; Canada, Ontario; Rivermead Golf Club - Aylmer; Adult; Primary Sound;
